Credit Risk Management for Banking Institutions – A Regulatory Perspective

 

INTRODUCTION

The Bank of Tanzania Act, 2006 and the Banking and The Banking and Financial Institutions Act, 2006 mandate Bank of Tanzania to license, regulate and supervise banking institutions in Tanzania. As a regulator, the Bank of Tanzania is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring stable, sound and safe banking sector and the financial system at large. In discharging this responsibility, it is in the interest of the Bank to ensure that various stakeholders in banking industry are conversant with the relevant legal and regulatory requirements governing their operations.

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE

At the end of this course the participants will be able to manage and do periodic review of their credit portfolios in line with the regulatory requirements and applicable best practices. The course will also expose participants on the essentials of credit risk management as emphasized by the regulator and other global standard bodies. The ultimate primary objective is to ensure that banking institutions maintain at any time, high quality credit portfolios that will derive the attainment of sound and safe financial system.

TARGET GROUP

Senior and middle level officers of banking institutions who are involved in the credit operations; member of staff who provide oversight to the credit function such as risk management, internal audit and compliance.

  • An Overview of Tanzania banking sector.
  • An Overview of risk management in Banking Institutions with emphasis on credit risk.
  • Essential elements of effective Credit Risk Management System.
  • Essential elements of Bank of Tanzania Prudential Guidelines relating to Credit Risk Management.
  • Board of Directors and senior management responsibilities in respect of Credit Risk Management.
  • Regulatory requirements for loan granting, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Credit portfolio assessment, classifications and provisioning as per Bank of Tanzania prudential requirements.
  • Credit portfolio assessment and charging of impairment as per the requirements of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Treatment of regulatory loan loss provisions and IFRS impairment.
  • Credit portfolio reporting requirements.
